American River Common Features 2016 Sacramento River East Levee
Being situated at the confluence and within the floodplain of two major rivers, the Sacramento Metropolitan area is highly susceptible to flooding, making it one of the most at-risk areas in the United States. In 2016, significant levee enhancements, primarily involving the construction of 22 miles of seepage cutoff walls on the American River, were completed as part of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) 96/99 project. The ongoing project will now extend to provide up to 11 miles of bank protection for the Lower American River levees, addressing seepage, stability, erosion, and height concerns not only along the American River but also in sections of the Natomas East Main Drainage Canal (NEMDC), Arcade Creek, and Magpie Creek.
